Kenya Equity Watch | 23 July 2015: Nairobi Stock Exchange witness the Bear today … market cap KES 21 MIl falls

Nairobi, Kenya (Capital Markets in Africa) — The bear invaded the Nairobi Stock Exchange today’s as a result the market capitalization lost KES 21 million to end at KES 2,160.06 billion relative to market capitalization of KES 2,180.95 billion recorded at previous trading session.  As the time, the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE20) index sagged by 39.15 points or 0.86 percent to close at 4,539.47 points and the Nairobi All Share Index tumbled by 1.45 points or 0.93 percent to settle at 154.25 points. However, the FTSE NSE 15 index and FTSE NSE 25 index remained unchanged at 205.71 points and 205.16 respectively.

Look at today’s market activities, the volume of shares traded went up 55.49 percent to close at 20.82 million and total turnover rose 44.46 percent to close at KES 530.41 million. SAFARICOM was the largest mover of the day with a turnover of KES 131.35 million representing 24.76 percent of the total market turnover. Other top actively traded were Co-operative Bank recorded a turnover of KES 88.791 million and KCB Group registered KES 87.450 million. Also, Nation Media and Equity Group had KES 63.841 million and KES 42.504 million respectively. In term of type of investor, foreign buys stood at 61.36 percent of total turnover, while foreign sales stood at 47.05 percent of total turnover.

From the market price movers’ viewpoint, National Bank emerged as the top gainer after adding 6.27 percent to end the day at KES 17.80. KAPCHORUA TEA Kenya surged by 3.16 percent to close the day at KES 196.00 and Eveready Kenya gained 2.53 percent to settle at KES 4.05. Likewise, KENOL KOBIL and OLYMPIA CAPITAL Kenya rose by 2.45 percent to end at KES 8.35 and 2.22 percent with closing price of KES 4.60 respectively.

On the contrary, Carbacid Investments Limited emerged as the top loser after falling by 6.10 percent to end the day at KES 15.40. Likewise, CAR & GENERAL Kenya closed at KES 44.75 by losing 4.79 percent on 27,500 traded shares. On the same trend, Centum Investments Kenya and BARCLAYS Bank Kenya tumbled by 4.72 percent and 4.68 percent to end at KES 50.50 and KES 14.25 respectively. TOTAL Kenya Limited also plummeted by 4.60 percent to close at KES 20.75 after investors bought and sold about 32,300 shares.

On currency market front, Kenya Shilling appreciated against majority of the trading currencies today. Kenyan Shilling gained against US dollar by 0.96 percent to trade at KES 100.52. Also, Kenyan Shilling appreciated against British pound by 0.53 percent to end at KES 157.06 and against the South African rand to close at KES 8.10, by gaining 1.40 percent. Likewise, Kenyan shilling appreciated by 1.00 percent against Euro to trade at KES 109.89.
