JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Capital Markets in Africa — At the closed of trading on Tuesday, Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) All Share index finished 0.22 percent or 106.88 points lower to close at 49,383.93 points  despite gains in resources and gold miners sector indices. The JSE Top 40 index also lost 82.86 points or 0.19 percent to end at 44,159.46 points.

The JSE financial sector index fell by 0.56 points to end at 42,194.47 points. Both Industrial and industrial 25 sector indexes lower by 0.36 percent to close at 73,535.78 points and fell by 0.35 percent to settle at 65,964.20 points respectively. The resource index surged by 0.16 percent or 49.82 points to close at 31,412.73 points and the Gold mining sector index added 0.56 percent or 5.22 points with a closing level of 936.67 points.

Looking at the market strength/breath (measured as ratio of gainers to losers), the market recorded 153 price gainers, 211 price losers and 51 remained unchanged, hence market strength/breathe closed negative.  Out of the top gainers was African Equity Empowerment Investments Limited, whose shares rose by 16.07 percent to close at ZAR 3.25 after investors exchanged 130,936 shares. Cognition Holdings Limited surged by 11.43 percent after traded 9,599 shares, boosting the share price to ZAR 1.95. Rex Trueform Clothing Company Limited also jumped by 9.09 percent to end at ZAR 12.00 after investors traded 1,000 shares. Renergen Limited advanced by 7.69 percent to end at ZAR 14.00 after exchanged a total of 513 shares. Glencore Xstrata Plc climbed by 7.59 percent to end at ZAR 16.58 after trading 90,915,378 shares.

On the losers’ table was, Super Group Limited Npl whose shares decrease to ZAR 3.52 after 269,874 shares were bought and sold, resulting in a fall of 21.25 percent. Conduit Capital Limited tumbled by 16.88 percent to close at ZAR 3.20, after 128,089 shares were traded. Allied Electronics Corp A plummeted by 10.53 percent to trade at ZAR 7.14 a share after investors bought and sold 693 shares. Lonmin Plc slumped by 9.57 percent to trade at ZAR 3.12 after 1,509,343 traded deals. After investors bought and sold 20 shares, Erin Energy Corporation sagged by 9.27 percent to trade at ZAR 49.90.

On the currency markets front, the South rand was stronger against US dollar at ZAR 13.9588 by adding 0.78 percent and against British pound to trade at ZAR 21.1246 after adding 0.94 percent. The rand appreciated by 0.78 percent against the Euro to close at ZAR 15.6979.
